Large carnivores of the Cantabrian mountains
“Cantábrico”, the westernmost mountain range in Europe, is almost 500 km long. Its extensive forests are home to populations of large carnivores as in few other places in Europe: bears, wolves, wild cats, and the enigmatic Pyrenean desman. We all want to enjoy watching a brown bear in the wild at some time in our lives… In this Spanish corner, it is very possible.
Cantabrian wildlife sanctuary
The area has always been famous among Spanish naturalists and its attractiveness is increasingly recognized internationally. Today, the Cantabrian range is one of the most attractive areas in Europe for nature trips, especially for bear watching.
A day of sightings
We will explore the territory in search of the bear and to know first hand the Cantabrian forests. Stops at the river and at a lagoon will allow us to add species.
Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic forest of temperate and humid climate, dominated by deciduous species such as oak, beech, ash, birch, maple and linden. There are also chestnut, hazel, rowan, yew and holly trees. Refuge for large fauna such as the Cantabrian capercaillie.
Dipper and Moorland Hawker
The river is a favorable environment to observe dragonflies and White-throat Dipper, which inhabit the well oxygenated streams. In the high mountain lakes, we find peat bogs and northern species of dragonflies such as Aeshna juncea and Lestes sponsa.
