It is not surprising that the wind, <strong>the winds, dominate everything<\/strong>, and decide everything and for everyone on the coast. Gibraltar is the homeland of the god Aeolus, it is a bit like living in the middle of the ocean.  <em><\/em><\/p>\n\n<ul style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700\" class=\"wp-block-list is-style-checkmark-list has-accent-4-background-color has-background\">\n<li class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-1\">Migratory birds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-2\">Northern bald ibis (census\u2193).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-3\">  Preserved coastline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-4\">Cetaceans (species guide\u2193).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-accent-1-color has-text-color has-link-color has-large-font-size wp-elements-5\">Two continents Two seas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The mythical point for bird migration<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wind blows and disperses the sand. The <g id=\"gid_0\">active dunes invade everything<\/g>: roads, fields and ancient Roman cities such as Baelo Claudia. Agriculture is difficult and favors the <strong>presence of cattle in the pastures<\/strong>. <strong>Migrations of large gliding birds<\/strong> (storks, eagles) stop or resume depending on wind gusts. In ancient times, this strait was called &#8220;the Pillars of Hercules&#8221;. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to its strategic international position, <strong>the coastline was massively militarized in the post-war years<\/strong> and was largely inaccessible until recently. Many rusty signs identify the abandoned military area. The absolute icon of this state of mind is the presence of <strong>&#8220;Retintas&#8221; cows on the beaches<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twice a year, Gibraltar is the site of the great bird migrations. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dialnet.unirioja.es\/servlet\/tesis?codigo=66768\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">great migrations of birds that spend the<\/a><\/strong> wintering in Africa and breeding in Europe. It is the main route for <strong>White Storks<\/strong><em>(Ciconia ciconia<\/em>), <strong>Black Storks<\/strong><em>(Ciconia nigra<\/em>) and several species of raptors: <strong>Black<\/strong> <strong>Kite<\/strong><em>(Milvus migrans<\/em>), <strong>Booted Eagle<\/strong><em>(Hieraaetus pennatus<\/em>), <strong>Short-toed<\/strong> <strong>Eagle<\/strong><em>(Circaetus gallicus<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To observe the migration, there are several observatories along the coast. Let&#8217;s get familiar with the winds, the <strong>Levante<\/strong> blowing from the Mediterranean and the <strong>Poniente<\/strong> of Atlantic origin.
