His 1784\u2019s <\/span>Introductio in oryctographiam, et zoologiam Aragoniae<\/span> consisted in the first catalogue following the Linnaean system published in Spain (Bach & Compte, 1997) and includes 9 species of Libellula (Odonata).<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Sympetrum-nigrifemur1.jpg” alt=”Sympetrum nigrifemur (A. Entomologists were no exception with the first dragonflies records published in 1803 by <\/span>Bory de Saint Vincent<\/span> (1778 \u2013 1846).<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_code _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_code][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”2em” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n The later <\/span>Histoire naturelle des Iles Canaries<\/span>, edited by <\/span>Philip Barker Webb<\/span> (1793 \u2013 1854) and <\/span>Sabin Berthelot<\/span> (1794 \u2013 1880), mentioned the presence of five species (Weihrauch, 2011), including <\/span>Libellula vulgata<\/span>, a taxon later elevated to the rank of species <\/span>Sympetrum nigrifemur <\/span>(Selys, 1884), and endemic of Macaronesia.<\/span> <\/span>Finally<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> <\/span>notably,<\/span> the type locality of the widespread <\/span>Orthetrum chrysostigma<\/span> (Burmeister, 1839) is Tenerife.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Zygonyx-torridus2.jpg” alt=”Zygonyx torridus (A. As a way of example, the coleopterist General <\/span>Auguste Dejean<\/span> (1780 \u2013 1845) famously crossed the country during Napoleonic wars. Very little time after Spanish independence, <\/span>Jules Pierre Rambur<\/span> (1801 \u2013 1870) took advantage of the fashion of the Romantics for Spain in order to explore Andalusia, but only started studying the odonates after his travels. <\/span>Edmond de Selys Longchamps<\/span> (1813 \u2013 1900) did not travel to Spain but gathered information on the Spanish fauna and reported numerous first records for the country in his seminal European works.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Platycnemis-latipes1.jpg” alt=”Platycnemis latipes (A. Edouard Pictet <\/span>(1835 \u2013 1879) published the first account dedicated to Spanish dragonflies, part of its <\/span>Synopsis des N\u00e9vropt\u00e8res d’Espagne<\/span>, which was further translated by <\/span>Hermann August Hagen <\/span>(1817 \u2013 1893).<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n The British naturalists generally explored the surroundings of their colony in Gibraltar, founded in the 18th century, and the C\u00e1diz province after the subsequent establishment of wine traders in Jerez de la Frontera. The English Neuroptera and Trichoptera specialist <\/span>Robert McLachlan<\/span> (1837 \u2013 1904) reported lists of species collected by correspondents from Gibraltar, Granada and Central Spain.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Ischnura-graellsii1.jpg” title_text=”Ischnura graellsii(1)” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” header_3_font=”||||||||” header_3_text_color=”#0C71C3″ header_3_font_size=”25px” custom_margin=”||20px||false|false” custom_padding=”0px||||false|false” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”2em” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In the same century, Natural History was also impulsed within Spain. The creation of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales (MNCN) in Madrid and the activities of its director <\/span>Mariano de la Paz Graells<\/span> (1809 \u2013 1898) promoted an era of collecting insects throughout the whole country and the rise of Spanish entomology (Bach & Compte, 1997) with an intense activity toward the end of the century and the creation of the Sociedad Espa\u00f1ola de Historia Natural. The first collected specimens of dragonflies kept in the MNCN collections belong to <\/span>Ischnura graellsii<\/span>, the Iberian bluetail, and were collected at an unknown locality in May 1888 and at La Garriga (Barcelona) in June 1889 (Par\u00eds <\/span>et al<\/span>., 2014). The catalan <\/span>Miquel Cun\u00ed i Martorell<\/span> (1827 \u2013 1902) is the first Spanish author to report on dragonflies with his list of Neuroptera from the Barcelona region published in 1878.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Anax-ephippiger1.jpg” alt=”Anax ephippiger (A. He published the first monograph dedicated to Spanish dragonflies in his <\/span>Sinopsis de los Paraneur\u00f3pteros (Odonatos) de la pen\u00ednsula ib\u00e9rica<\/span> (1924), which was based on many of its previous works on the group and presented the first identification key in Spanish of adult odonata in this territory.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Oxygastra-curtisii1.jpg” alt=”Oxygastra curtisii (A. Nevertheless, isolated odonatological works were undertaken by <\/span>Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Andreu Rubio<\/span> (1881 \u2013 1967) and by the enigmatic <\/span>Antonio Ben\u00edtez Morera<\/span>, author of the <\/span>Odonates of Spain<\/span> edited by the Spanish Institute of Entomology (1950). <\/span>Arturo Compte Sart<\/span> (1933 \u2013 2023) joined the Spanish Council of Research Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas (CSIC) in the 60\u2019s and became the leading figure on Odonata in Spain, publishing, among other works, the first identification key in Spanish of the nymphs of the Balearic Islands.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Trithemis-annulata1.jpg” alt=”Trithemis annulata (A. The exploration of its countryside and odonatofauna required an effort difficult to imagine nowadays and the access to scientific information was very limited. Ocharan\u2019s PhD was a major turning point with its mapping of Spanish Odonata.<\/span> <\/span>He subsequently described two endemic subspecies <\/span>Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis asturica <\/span>Ocharan, 1983 and <\/span>Sympetrum vulgatum ibericum <\/span>Ocharan, 1985.<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.23.1″ _module_preset=”default” text_font_size=”18px” text_line_height=”2em” locked=”off” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n <\/span><\/span>Spain’s democracy renewed and sparked the interest of European odonatologists for the country in the 1980\u2019s and 1990\u2019s, culminating with the choral <\/span>Studies on Iberian dragonflies<\/span> edited in 1996 by <\/span>Reinhard J\u00f6dicke<\/span>, that presented faunistic information from many areas of the country so far unexplored.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Ischnura-sahariensis-\u2640.jpeg” alt=”Ischnura sahariensis \u2640 (A. Without being exhaustive, and only to illustrate the advancement of dragonflies studies in Spain, it is worthy to note the pioneering citizen science webpage <\/span>Biodiversidad Virtual \/ Insectarium Virtual<\/span> (1998) and the first published regional atlas <\/span>Les lib\u00e8l\u00b7lules de la Comunitat Valenciana<\/span> (2006).<\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/g3-guides.com\/\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Trithemis-kirbyi31.jpg” alt=”Trithemis kirbyi (A. He specialised in Lepidoptera but had a broad range of interests within Natural History.
