A day of observation

The diversity hot spot

We will discover plant diversity in a didactic way, focusing on emblematic species and observing in the field the adaptations of plants to the harsh Mediterranean climate. The Mediterranean basin is a biodiversity hotspot, the third richest in plant species in the world, with 25,000 species and numerous endemic species. We will spend a great day in the field to better understand this ecosystem.

Forest diversity

Andalusia’s forests include evergreen oak forests such as holm oaks and cork oaks, deciduous forests such as gall oaks and Andalusian oaks, pine forests such as the Salgareño and Resin pine, wild olive groves with wild olive trees and riparian forests with poplars and willows, all with high biodiversity and unique characteristics.

Adaptations Mediterranean

Mediterranean plants are adapted to hot, dry summers and mild winters. They develop small, thick, waxy leaves to reduce water loss. They have deep roots, store water in tissues, produce essential oils and resins. Many are pyrophytes, resistant to fire, and some have short life cycles.

Introduction to botany

Microscopy is essential to examine the adaptations of sclerophyllous leaves to the Mediterranean climate. These microscopic structures help reduce water loss and protect against intense heat and solar radiation. Botany studies plants, their structure, function, diversity, evolution and their relationship to the environment.

Hiking trails

Trails are valuable tools for observing and learning about plants in their natural habitat. They allow hikers to connect with nature, identifying diverse plant species and their adaptations. In addition, walking on these trails contributes to physical and mental well-being.
