An excellent ornithological tour

The tour allows you to discover the Mediterranean birdlife as well as a sample of the main ecosystems of Andalusia, from the coast to the mountains. It offers good conditions for photography, including three globally rare species such as the White-headed Duck, the Slender-billed Gull and the Marble Teal.

Seabirds and shorebirds

Seabirds are especially abundant in winter and during the migration season. Their observation, early in the morning, is possible from Cabo Pino, Calaburras (Calahonda marine protected area) or Guadalmar.

Guadalhorce Natural Park

A visit to the mouth of the Guadalhorce is a must as it is one of the most attractive wetlands in Andalusia and one of the best bird watching sites in Spain. A wide range of waterfowl and waders, … and many more common in terrestrial environments, await us.

Sierra Blanca of Marbella

The visit of El Juanar offers beautiful views over the coast and Africa. The pine forest shelters interesting forest birds and protects us from the heat during hot days. Midday is usually favorable for raptor watching.

Mediterranean stream

Finally, a Mediterranean stream that originates in the Sierra de Las Nieves National Park offers the possibility of completing the list with scrubland and Mediterranean scrubland birds.

Tour variants and options

A whole day in the Guadalhorce Natural Area

We can focus on exploring the Desembocadura del Guadalhorce, walking its four kilometers of trail and take the time to see all the birdlife present that day in the natural area. The visit of nearby points brings bee-eaters, hoopoes and other species such as the spotless starling.

The coastal route

The tour presented in the card explores the coast and the reliefs closest to the sea, near the cities of Malaga, Marbella and Estepona. Several high points offer unbeatable vantage points overlooking the sea and good habitats for a great variety of birds of the Mediterranean bush.

The tour to the interior

Alternatively, there is the option of leaving the coast after visiting the Guadalhorce and going inland to the Gaitanes Gorge, where we will find a large colony of griffon vultures, accompanied by other rupicolous birds.

The ‘plus’. The visit of well-preserved natural spaces where both aquatic and terrestrial birds abound. Proximity to the Costa del Sol, an area with a high density of human population.
