Spain is a widely recognized destination for bird watching, thanks to its strategic location and diversity of ecosystems, with more than 657 Special Protection Areas for Birds. This ornithological tourism attracts enthusiasts from all over the world for its unique avifaunal richness.

First of all, I would like to highlight the importance and interest of our country for birdwatching… Spain is the leading country in terms of bird reports published in Cloudbirder and Andalusia is by far the most visited region by birders and amateur naturalists. Definitely, birding experiences are offered for all tastes.

What is a bird guide… in Andalusia, Spain and elsewhere?
A birding guide is a resource or individual who helps birding enthusiasts, or birders, identify and observe species in their natural habitats. Birding guides can take many forms, from printed field guides and websites to experienced birders who lead field trips or provide one-on-one advice. Below are some elements of a birding guide.

Books: field guides in Andalusia
Printed or digital field guides are reference books that provide detailed information on different bird species, including their physical characteristics, distribution, and behaviors. Some popular field guides include those by Roger Tory Peterson, Lars Johnson, and Lars Svensson, the European bible for birders and arguably the best field guide in the world.
We recommend the bilingual version (Spanish, English): Guide to birds of the Strait of Gibraltar, Alcornocales and La Janda.. Oryx. An excellent local field guide with good phenological information.

List of species
Besides a good identification field guide, the most basic information you need to know about a territory is its list of species recorded so far. This is usually presented in some order (alphabetical, taxonomic) with additional information about the rarity of the bird and the time of year when it can be observed. The best species list concentrates all this information in the smallest possible space.

If you prefer books, opt for a classic: Where to Watch Birds in Southern and Western Spain.. Bloomsbury. A bit old-fashioned and a long compilation of the best birding sites south of Madrid.

Birding Apps
There are mobile applications designed for birding that offer functions such as bird identification, calling and mapping. These apps can be useful in the field for quick species identification.
- The best overall application for image recording and recognition: Obsmapp.
- The best application for sound recording: Birdnet.
- The best identification application: Collins field guide.

Online Resources
There are numerous websites that help birders identify and learn more about birds, such as Observation, eBird, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology – All About Birds, Xenocanto, which offer a wealth of information, photographs, and recordings of bird species.
The website of the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/Birdlife) is full of information… with online species guide (Spanish).

Local knowledge
Local knowledge is invaluable when birding, as it can lead to sightings of rare or elusive species. Local birders, guides, and enthusiastic naturalists often have specialized knowledge about the birds in their region.
Andalusian birders, Spanish or European, living or visiting the country frequently form a nice and first class community, especially in the provinces of Malaga and Cadiz (but not only). Feel free to talk and share your experiences.
Responsible behaviour and ethics
When using a birding guide, whether it is a book, website, app, or human guide, it is critical to follow ethical birding practices. This includes respecting wildlife and their habitats, maintaining a safe distance and minimizing disturbance to birds. Birding can be a rewarding and educational activity, and guides are essential resources to help enthusiasts make the most of their experiences.

Local ornithological groups
In many regions there are local birding clubs or groups where enthusiasts can meet, share information, and organize birding excursions. These groups often have experienced members who can serve as guides for newcomers.

What is the point of a birding guide in the e-Bird era?
It is clear that the amount of information available today on the Internet is enormous. Check again the reasons why to rely on a nature guide for your travels. More specifically about birdwatching…
The guide knows his trade and has great local knowledge, chooses the best places in a region that a visitor may be discovering for the first time, has a great capacity to adapt according to weather conditions, can give advice and has the ability to access information quickly. Good guides know much more than ornithology and can talk about ecology in general.
