Spanish Ibex (Capra pyrenaica)
A gregarious and social species, the ibex(Capra pyrenaica) is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain). It moves easily in rocky and steep terrain.
Relative of the domestic goat
One of nine species of wild goats distributed mainly in the Middle East and Europe. It inhabits exclusively the mountainous areas of Spain and Portugal and was on the verge of extinction at the end of the 19th century due to overhunting, leading to the extinction of two subspecies. Thanks to conservation measures since 1950, the population has recovered but only reaches high densities in localized pockets.
Rut of the ibex
Late November – December in a typical year. Spectacular rutting, with particularly violent confrontations between males. In these ritual fights, the most powerful individuals (weighing almost twice as much as the females), most capable of passing on to their offspring, are selected. Females in heat run to attract the attention of the males. Otherwise, the rest of the year the species is gregarious and shy.
Torcal de Antequera
El Torcal is an unbeatable setting for a complete nature observation tour, where you can enjoy both the landscapes and geology, with the karst erosion pattern typical of the limestone mountains, as well as the restricted birdlife in the rocky areas (rock-trushes, wheatears), and the rich Mediterranean flora, with spectacular Montpellier maples and more bulbous plants in bloom.
