Palearctic otter (Lutra lutra)

The interest of an otter tour in Andalusia lies in the opportunity to observe this elusive mammal in its natural habitat. Some specific circumstances facilitate the sighting of one of the most attractive mammals in Europe. Their round face with large eyes, their hands that manipulate prey with skill, their great activity in the water and interactions with conspecifics, turn an otter sighting into an unforgettable moment.

Otter detection

Although otters are present in most of the river basins of Spain, and very common in the rivers of Andalusia, they are usually difficult to observe in the field. Not for nothing are they described as elusive. Their presence is quite easily detected by actively searching for their characteristic tracks, droppings and footprints.

Field observation

Otters are most active at dawn and dusk. The most common situation would be to observe the mustelid moving away from us. In specific situations, often when they have become accustomed to human presence, the chances of observation increase to the point of having a realistic chance of success.

Where to stay?

We offer this tour dedicated to otters to visit the locations with the best chance of sightings. It is important to be willing to enjoy all the biodiversity in case there is no success with the mustelid. We can meet in Sierra Morena or on the Costa del Sol to plan a dedicated tour.

A more social species

It was traditionally considered a solitary species, except during reproduction. However, recent studies, and observations in 2025 suggest that its social behavior may be more complex than previously thought.

Tour variants and options

It combines perfectly with the Iberian lynx tour in the Sierra de Andújar.

The “plus”. Otters choose fish-rich river stretches, where other fish-eating species such as kingfishers and great cormorants are abundant.
