Diversity of bulbous plants in Andalusia

Andalusia is home to more than 4,000 vascular plants, being part of the world’s biodiversity hotspot of the Mediterranean, where geophytes are particularly abundant. Once parched, these herbaceous perennials resist drought by storing their reserves in the soil in the form of rhizome, bulb, tuber or tuberous root. Blooms are usually short but spectacular with large flowers, often in a tapestry of hundreds of individuals.

Orchids (Orchidaeae)

Andalusia hosts 70% of the orchids in Spain, with 7 Ibero-Maghrebi endemisms and a great abundance of bee-orchids (Ophrys spp.) and Serapias. We will find the greatest diversity in the limestone mountains (Grazalema, Malaga). Wild orchids are often discrete and small in size, but very photogenic. See our guide to orchids in Andalusia.

Iridaceae (Iris, Gladiolus)

The old botanical genus Iris has been divided into many new ones, complicating the task of the naturalist. Species of larger size and very showy in the field. They are especially beautiful and very decorative plants… Andalusia dresses up like a giant bouquet of flowers during the spring.

Amaryllidaceae (Narcissus, Allium) and Asparagaceae (Hyacinths, Muscari)

Flowers of radial symmetry (like a daisy), large and solitary, or small and compact. The greatest diversity of daffodils in the world is found in the Iberian Peninsula. Many species are cultivated in gardening… We will discover their origin in the Mediterranean bush. The coastal dunes are home to the sea lily(Pancratium).

Liliaceae(Fritillaria, Gagea, Tulipa)

Bulbous plants belong to the monocotyledons, which are plants with flowers with multiple symmetry of 3. The liliaceae A family far from the previous families and with few representatives in Andalusia. They are reminiscent of daffodils, but the female part of the flower is superior, without an extremity in the form of a scape.
