A day of activity

Private groups

Greater Flamingoes are the main protagonist at Fuente de Piedra

Birding tour in the province of Malaga

A great variety of aquatic, steppe and mountain birds in this spectacular tour where most of the regular birds of Malaga can be seen. The flamingos are the main protagonist of Fuente de Piedra and very peculiar birds with only seven species in the world, so different from the others that are grouped in a separate order on the 40 existing ones. Everything is striking about these birds, from their morphology, to their color, habitat and breeding habits.

Fuente de Piedra Lagoon

Exploring Fuente de Piedra needs dedication to take advantage of its great diversity of birdlife. Early start in the morning with a visit to the viewpoint over the winter roosting of cranes followed by a tour all the way around the lagoon before reaching the visitor center, where the greatest variety of wetlands is waiting for us.

The great flamingo colony

The second most important colony in Europe, with up to 20,000 breeding pairs. The flamingos find ideal conditions, with shallow, saline waters, to breed on low-lying islands, where they build their mud nests. The lagoon also hosts the Lesser Flamingo (Phoeniconaias minor) on a regular basis.

Avifauna of the agricultural steppes

Species adapted to the mosaic of cereal crops, pastures and olive groves, such as Stone Curlew, Lesser Kestrel or Montagu’s Harrier are emblematic of the environment. Steppe birds, and in particular the Little Bustard, have declined drastically in recent decades.

Antequera: “El” Torcal

This Special Protection Area for Birds allows the observation of birds of prey, Grifon Vulture, Peregrine Falcon and passerines, Black Wheather, Black-eared Wheather, Red-billed Chough, Blue Rock-Thrush, Alpine Swift, a group of Mediterranean warblers and the Rock Bunting.

Tour variants and options

We will have to decide how much time we want to dedicate to each of these outstanding spaces.

We also have the option of moving to the agricultural steppes of the nearby Navahermosa, and perhaps to Osuna, in the province of Seville, where the Great Bustards, Roller and other steppe birds survive.

The Antequera train station (Santa Ana), although far from the city center, provides convenient access from the cities of Granada, Malaga and Cordoba. Likewise, we can meet early in the morning to enjoy a long day of sightings.

The small town of Antequera, centrally located in Andalusia, offers a perfect stage for the traveler with its well preserved urbanism, wide views from viewpoints in the upper town, medieval castle and relaxed atmosphere. We recommend this stage.

As a popular alternative, we can follow the route to the city of Ronda and finish a great day of bird watching.

The “plus”. The grandiose and contrasting landscapes. On the one hand, the unreachable plain by the sight of the almost seven kilometers long Fuente de Piedra lagoon. On the other hand, the striking cliffs and crags of the Torcal de Antequera.
